Aden Ras Morbat Clinic - Nov 2-5 2009

A four day plastic surgery camp was held at the Ras Morbat Clinic in Aden. The camp details were arranged by a locally based medical team with their own nurses, doctors, and other medical and support personnel. A local plastic surgeon from the Aden Republican hospital was invited to train in newer methods of cleft and aesthetic surgery.

Over a four day period, over thirty patients were seen and eighteen patients admitted and operated for cleft lip, palate, burn contractures, ptosis, aesthetic septo rhinoplasty, lip and nose implants, and other problems like scars and benign growths needing cosmetic surgery. The remainder of patients were requested to attend the next camp in Feb 2010.

At the invitation of Yemen Smile, Dr.Ashish Sabharwal, Manager of the Smile Train Programmes in India (www.smiletrain.org) visited the camp for one day to meet with local surgeons and other hospital staff. He presented some of the Smile Train CDs and brochures to a local hospital as well as to the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation.

Special thanks to the leaders and staff of Ras Morbat for the successful camp, and to the US embassy Sana’a and friends for the generous financial support for the camps.  Special meetings were held with the Ministry of Planning, Aden Republican hospital, Sheraton Aden where Dr. Ashish presented the work of the Smile Train.
