YEMEN SMILE
A small charity dedicated to providing cleft palate surgery to children in Yemen

The Charity

Yemen Smile was started in a very informal way in June 2003 by members of the international community in Yemen, after a conversation in the British Club in Sana ́a the Yemeni capital.

Yemen Smile has had strong connections to the UK since its establishment. Our first patron was Frances Guy, the then British Ambassador to Yemen.  Since 2004, the current British Ambassador, Mike Gifford, and his wife Trish have taken a close interest in the charity and have provided practical and moral support.

(But Yemen Smile has no formal connection with the British Embassy in Yemen or the British government)

Development of the Charity

In late 2005 it was decided that the time had come to put Yemen Smile on a more organized footing.  We established a more formal way of working, with a board of voluntary trustees who support and fund the local work of Yemen Smile which is carried on through locally-registered international non-governmental organizations (NGO) in Yemen.

In September 2007 the medical section of Yemen Smile was named Yemen Smile Mission supported by international patrons and a Sana`a based medical team. In the long term we hope to seek charitable status in the UK.
