Ibtisamat Al-Yemen Alsaeed Camp - May 4-8 2008

A special Aesthetic Recon and ENT camp was held in Seiyun and Sana’a from the 4th of May-8th May 2008. The Director General of Seiyun Dr.Hussein Haddad and Director of the hospital Dr. Alkaff   very kindly received the team at Seiyun General Hospital and made all necessary arrangements for the successful implementation of the programme in Seiyun. Since there was little time for detailed preparations, the Director General put all his OT staff and doctors on duty for the three day camp. The Yemeni staff of Seiyun hospital along with Dr. Alawi and Dr. Fauzia and staff prepared the necessary papers for the pre operative patients.

On day one, visiting ENT consultant Dr.Jean Paul Roux from Marseilles demonstrated two microsurgical repairs of the perforated ear drum to local surgeons and also demonstrated a simple method of draining the maxillary sinus. Dr. Wahed Neza, our consultant anesthetist known all over the country for his dedicated work and safe techniques, took complete charge of anesthesia for all the surgeries and was assisted by the local anesthesia staff.

Apart from the Seiyun hospital surgeries, Dr.Jean also visited the Total camp site Saf to consult over a hundred patients with ENT problems. He was clearly overwhelmed by the ENT problems in Yemen and decided to come back for another teaching camp later this year with Yemen Smile. He operated five ENT cases and taught some new techniques to the local ENT surgeon Dr.Fauzia.

The local surgeons at the hospital requested the team to continue their teaching sessions for the benefit of their staff and patients. Dr.Bona presented a one hour lecture on making a beautiful smile for Yemen and shared about the importance of balancing the nose with aesthetic surgery so that patients would be more satisfied. The talk was well received by all the doctors and some of them joined the live demonstrations of aesthetic nose and hand surgery in the theatre. A difficult anterior cleft palate fistula repair using a neurovascular flap was also demonstrated in one of the sessions.

In Sana’a an ongoing camp for the month of May received over twenty five patients with cleft and other problems; three were operated in the first session. Altogether thirteen patients were operated over a six day period. Special thank you certificates were presented by the Ministry of Health Office to the three doctors for their work in Seiyun.

Thanks  to Total for the air tickets, to DNO for the camp support and all Yemeni and expat donors for the encouragement and logistical support. Thanks also to Dr. Hussein Haddad and staff of Seiyun Health Office for paying  the hotel bills of Dr.Wahid and Bona during the entire period of stay in Seiyun.
