Mukalla Camp, 10 – 13 January 2009
|
|
The Mukalla smile camp was held at the Ibn
Sina hospital from the 10th to the 13th
of January. Nineteen patients were screened for cleft and other
complicated facial deformities over a three day period and seven
were successfully operated.
|
|
Two weeks earlier, ten other plastic
surgery patients were seen at two hospitals in Sana city and some
were scheduled for surgery later in the month.
A local hospital in the city of Taiz had also registered over
ten cleft and facial deformity patients for the charity to help
them in the month of February.

 |
|
A few Yemeni specialist surgeons attended the training camp and
were taught the methods of facial reconstruction.
Many of the patients had travelled long
distances from their villages for the consultations; however, the
hospital did not have adequate operation rooms to accommodate all
the 19 patients and the ones on the waiting list were asked to
return for surgery in six months.

 |
 |
As a result of the economic downturn in
most Yemeni towns and villages, many Yemeni cleft and plastic
surgery patients continue to wait long periods before they can even
hope to get their deformities corrected by visiting expat plastic
surgeons.
The waiting list of cleft and other
patients now stands at over forty at various Smile cell units
across Taiz, Sana and Mukalla.

|
Special thanks to Yemeni medical friends
for helping with the camps and all expat donors for the continued
support.
