Mukalla
Camp, 11 – 15 November 2006
|
|
Dr Bona Lotha,
Medical Director of Yemen Smile, undertook a four-day camp in
Mukalla, Hadramaut governorate, from 11 to 15 November 2006, in
cooperation with the local hospital authorities. The camp was
advertised in advance through the press in Hadramaut and on Yemen
radio. Twelve patients (all children) were screened and operated
on during the four days; all operations passed off successfully.
Up to 25
patients presented themselves for treatment, so more operations
could have been done, but due to the complexity of cases presented
and the time available, it was decided to limit the numbers
accordingly. Some of the patients had undergone some treatment in
Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Kuwait, but had returned to Yemen with
serious remedial work still needing to be done. Others had made
the long journey from Al-Mahra governorate, next to the Omani
border, in some cases involving a journey of up to seven hours.

Dr Bona also
gave a lecture and did practical demonstrations for four to five
local Yemeni medical practitioners on surgical techniques covering
cleft lip and palate, burn contracture surgery, nose reconstruction
surgery and correction of bad scars.
Yemen Smile
is grateful to the authorities at Ibn Sina Hospital, Mukalla, for
their cooperation and help during the camp, and to Total and DNO
for their continued funding of the charity’s work.

On conclusion
of the camp, Dr Bona said, ‘There is clearly a huge need for
expertise in both cleft and burns surgery in Hadramaut. I saw a
number of cases of serious burns which had not been treated
properly, and sadly some patients who had suffered from
inappropriate medical treatment in the past. Yemen Smile hopes to
conduct a similar camp in the spring of 2007.’
