Sana’a camp 22-24 November 2009

A three day cleft charity camp was conducted for  eight cleft lip and palate children from the Sana’a  and Hais regions.  The programme was run by the local medical staff of  Hadda hospital along with the sponsorship of  Heiva,Travis, Richard and their team from the US embassy, Sana’a.

All the children did well postoperatively and are being followed up by the medical care team in Hais. Some of the children would need several follow up surgeries at a later date.

There are many untreated cases of cleft lip and palate in the Hodeidah region and plans are being made to study the possibility of taking cleft care and reconstructive  services to the remote regions of Hais through a local government hospital which would need some support for medical equipment and cleft surgeries.

One of the  major needs in this country  is a multidisciplinary  approach to cleft problems . There are no centres in Yemen capable to delivering such services and many cleft patients either wait their entire lives or suffer iatrogenic  deformities.

Special thanks to the leaders of the Hadda hospital which  offers these services at  a very low cost for each patient ;the rate  offered by Dr.Omran Nooman is often more than ten times cheaper than the fees demanded by some  surgeons  who have had some basic cleft and burns surgery  training from expat visting teams(about $1000 and above  for each cleft lip) in the local government hospitals of the country.
