Socotra Camp, 28 Feb – 5 March 2009
|
|
A one week long aesthetic and
reconstructive camp was held at the Hadibo hospital in Socotra .
Forty four patients registered at the clinic for various plastic
surgery deformities. Over a six day period, twenty eight patients
were admitted. Two follow up patients in Sana also received surgery
for cleft lip and complete cleft palate. The operations went
successfully and altogether thirty cases were operated.
|
|
The types of surgery at these
consultations were:
-
Burns reconstructions
-
Cosmetic surgery of face and
chest scars
-
One unilateral cleft lip
repair
-
One complete cleft palate
repair for a Filipino boy who was treated earlier by us for a
cleft lip
-
One perforator flap for
chronic tibial osteomyelitis
-
One large Para umbilical
hernia repair with cosmetic reduction of the belly button
-
One Hemifacial facelift for
a man with a large 3 by 5 cm preauricular scar
-
One manipulation under anesthesia of a post trauma stiff elbow joint
-
One partial reconstruction of
the right ear after a human bite
-
Correction of
a distorted and displaced nasal septum in a man

The camp
was attended by many local Socotri staff who helped with the
arrangements and cleaning of the operation room, which was a
makeshift facility in one of the clinics.
The Hadibo hospital in Socotra
is a very poor and run down hospital with few basic medical items.
The only patient oxygen monitor on the island had broken down
completely after several years of service and the team had to use a
mini portable battery oxygen reader for all the operations.
|
|
A needs assessment was done by
the team during the camp and the following items would be needed for
the poor patients of this island in the near future before other major
camps can be conducted:
-
A multiparameter patient
monitor which costs approximately 1700 US dollars
-
A generous supply of operation
gowns, green drapes for the theatre, gloves, and sterilizing fluids

charity in Sana’a.
