Yarim Cleft Camp, February 2010

The Yarim cleft lip and palate camp sponsored by the Smile Train and Yemen Smile was held at Yarim government hospital from Wednesday the 17th of February  till Sunday the 28th of Feb. A nationwide announcement was made by the Government of Yemen through the local Govt newspapers, television and radio.

The Republican newspaper office and television crew visited the Smile operation programme at Yarim hospital on the first day of the camp. Yarim govt hospital is a World Bank funded project that helps poor Yemeni patients from across the entire country and has  up to date facilities with two well equipped operation theatres and  well trained ICU  staff.

Patients attended the camp from the regions of Taiz, Ibb, Yarim, Dhamar, Hodeidah,Sana’a and other regions of Yemen. Over 55 patients were screened over a period of one week and a total number of   50 cleft lip and palate patients  and a patient with lip and nose injury received  free surgeries.

Some of the previously operated cleft palate cases needed tertiary level care and could not be accommodated in this camp; a few cleft patients had respiratory tract infections and their surgeries were postponed.

The local government authorities of Yarim extended their full support for the smile programmes and requested the cleft team to continue such free services in Yarim for the benefit of all Yemeni cleft patients.

The anesthesia and nursing team of the hospital included ICU anesthesia doctors Mohamed Shari, Mohd Obasi, Mohd Taha, Mohd, Fuad, Jameela, Wahed and others. The OT had an adjoining ICU with defibrillator and monitoring systems which were in excellent working condition.

The local Yemeni team did an outstanding job in taking care of the patients in the theatre, monitoring post op patients and follow up care in the wards and opds. The local smile team worked long hours everyday from 6.30 am till 6.30pm .A portable USB pulse oxygen monitor was donated by the charity to the team for post op care.

A local Govt hospital ENT lecturer along with a few local dentists attended the training sessions on 2010 newer and improved cleft surgery methods. All the patients did well post op and were followed up by the hospital team.

This was the third Smile Train and Yemen Smile cleft camp for the nation of Yemen through Yarim hospital. The earlier two smile camps were held a month earlier at Jibla and Karama Taiz. Dr.Ashish Sabharwal, Manager of Smile Train  programmes for South Asia contacted the smile team to encourage more smiles for the nation of Yemen through Yarim hospital and assured the team of all necessary logistical support to achieve this vision of smiles for Yemen .The next camp will be held after a few dozen patients are registered within the next 6-7 weeks.

Special thanks to the US Embassy Sana’a leaders Ambassador Stephen Seche , Susan Canning and  US embassy staff for helping the charity to meet some of the major expenses for the marathon camp through their fund raising event, “An Occasion to Smile- in aid of Yemen Smile” at the US Embassy Residence a few months ago.
